Roman Town: The Premier
Archaeology Video Game for Kids
2010. Dig It! Games. 978-0-98452-790-8.
Grade 3 & Up
K-5 6-8 Need a way to make Latin class more interesting
or ancient history more intriguing? This video game
does exactly that. Players are taken through a short
introduction to the archaeological dig and their role as
excavator. At the site, a town covered by the eruption
of Mount Vesuvius, there’s a dig with six levels. In each
level, players choose tools, help uncover artifacts, and
learn more about their uses with the help of ancient
and modern characters. Once uncovered, artifacts are
sorted and more information is given. Mini-games are
unlocked as portions of a house are excavated. Quizzes
at each level test learning with activities such as word
seek, term match, and true-false. The game is fun and
interesting, and even high schoolers and adults can enjoy
it and learn from it. Currently available for Windows
OS, a Mac version is coming. The game is a fun way to
learn about archaeology and history at home, in class,
or at the library. Recommended. Betsy Ruffin, Librarian-
Technologist, Irving Elementary, Cleburne, Texas
